Twenty gold Rolex watches, each worth up to pounds 5000, were swiped from the jewellers inside the famous Old Course Hotel at St Andrews. Fife Police have already quizzed a group of chartered accountants who had booked the hotel - where rooms cost pounds 250 a night - last week for a seminar on insolvency. A hotel insider said: "The whole place was booked by these chaps, and it gave them a good laugh because they were all there to talk about going bust. "I don't think anyone would be desperate enough to steal the watches, however, but the theft has given everyone plenty to talk about. "The police were called in and the accountants spoken to, but really only to rule them out of the equation." The watches were all in a glass display case at the Old Course Jewellers in the hotel foyer. The glass was not broken in the raid, which means that either someone carelessly left it unlocked or the hit was the work of the professional, organised gang, probably stealing to order. The insider said: "Either way, it's a lot of money to lose in one day." A spokesman for the hotel refused to comment and a woman at the jewellery business said: "I am not allowed to say anything." One hotel worker said: "This place is snooty at the best of times, but the security now is unbelievable. "Everybody is paranoid in case the bosses suspect them of stealing.
